FAQ's
Welcome to the Booked and Balanced by Sheena FAQ page. Here you'll find answers to some of the most common questions about bookkeeping and how our services can benefit your business.
What is a bookkeeper?
A bookkeeper is a financial professional responsible for the meticulous recording of a business's daily financial transactions. This includes tracking every sale, purchase, expense, and payment to maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records. Core tasks involve data entry, managing accounts payable (what you owe) and accounts receivable (what you're owed), processing payroll, and performing regular bank and credit card reconciliations. In essence, a bookkeeper lays the essential groundwork that allows accountants to analyze financial data, develop high-level strategies, and ensure the long-term financial health of the business.
Why are bookkeepers important?
Bookkeepers are crucial because they provide the accurate and organized financial records that form the foundation of your business's financial health. Without this solid base, it's nearly impossible to make sound business decisions, understand your cash flow, or plan for growth. An experienced bookkeeper ensures your financial data is reliable, which is vital for securing loans, attracting investors, and maintaining compliance. They free up your valuable time, reduce the risk of costly errors, and provide a clear, real-time picture of your company's performance, empowering you to run your business with confidence.
What is the main difference between bookkeeping and accounting?
While often used interchangeably, bookkeeping and accounting are distinct but related functions. Think of it this way: bookkeeping builds the foundation, while accounting builds the house on top of it.
-
Bookkeeping is the process of recording and organizing day-to-day financial transactions. It is a transactional and administrative role focused on producing a complete and accurate set of financial books.
-
Accounting is a higher-level function that involves analyzing and interpreting the financial data compiled by the bookkeeper. Accountants provide strategic financial insights, prepare detailed financial statements and reports, and offer advice to help business owners make informed decisions, file taxes correctly, and plan for future financial goals.
Can you help with my taxes?
We can certainly assist in preparing your financial records for tax season. We ensure that your books are organized and provide all the necessary reports, such as Profit & Loss and Balance Sheets, for your designated accountant or CPA. However, it's important to note that we are not certified tax preparers ourselves. Our role is to collaborate closely with your tax professional to make the filing process as smooth, accurate, and timely as possible by providing them with clean, comprehensive financial data.
How do I know if or when I need a bookkeeper?
It's a great time to consider hiring a professional bookkeeper if you notice a few key signs. If you find yourself spending a significant amount of your time managing receipts, tracking invoices, and worrying about your financial records instead of focusing on growing your business, a bookkeeper can be a game-changer. Other indicators include uncertainty about the accuracy of your financial data, falling behind on invoicing or paying bills, or feeling overwhelmed during tax season. A bookkeeper can streamline these financial processes, ensure everything is organized and precise, and give you back the time and peace of mind you need to lead your business effectively.
